A nemzetközi irodalomban aktív vita tárgya mind az európaizálódás, mind annak jellemzői a Nyugat-Balkánon.[1] Az európaizáció fogalma a politikatudomány és az európai tanulmányok irodalmából származik, és olyan hatásokat vizsgál, amelyeket az európai integráció okoz. Az európaizáció értelmezhető belső és külső hatásként, azaz vizsgálja az EU és a tagállamok, illetve az EU-harmadik országok kölcsönhatását. Külső hatásként való értelmezése hasznos elemzési keret lehet az újabban Nyugat-Balkánnak nevezett régió esetében. A Nyugat-Balkán európaizációjának egyik legfontosabb jellemzője, hogy a térségben az Európai Unió nem szerepel olyan biztos horgonyként az átalakulásban – legfőképpen a csatlakozási horizont hiánya miatt –, mint a kelet-közép-európai országokban. A gazdasági kapcsolatok ugyanakkor a csatlakozás konkrét menetrendje nélkül is egyre szorosabbak lesznek.

Europeanization in the Western Balkans
Synopsis: 

Both Europeanization and its manifestation in the Western Balkans are question under debate in the international literature. The concept of Europeanization as external impact is a useful framework for the analysis of the region recently called Western Balkans. It is considerable to distinguish Europeanization Southeastern Europe style. The common denominators of the definitions for the Europeanization process of Southeastern Europe are the following: it is externally controlled, coercive and more and more demanding. The EU has a powerful instrument in its hand called conditionality. In the Western Balkans region the EU does not functions as a stable anchor in the transformation process as it did in case of the Central and Eastern European countries, mostly because of the absence of the accession horizon. On the other hand the economic relations will be increasingly tight without the concrete schedule of the accession process.
