A fenntartható fejlődés végcélja maga a fenntarthatóság: az idődimenzióban korlátlan távú, töretlen fennmaradás. Ehhez elengedhetetlen a környezeti pillér megóvása, amely a természetvédelem, az élőhelyvédelem, az élővilág-védelem, illetve a környezetvédelem célja. Ezek a védelmi rendszerek „az élet természeti alapjait” törekednek megóvni az azokat fenyegető, félreértelmezett gazdasági érdekekkel szemben, jelentős részben magának az emberi társadalomnak a védelmében. Természetesen önmagában helyesnek látszó cél a gazdasági növekedés, a folyamatosan növekvő lélekszámú emberiség anyagi javakkal történő ellátása legalább az emberi méltóság garantálásának szintjéig, azonban egy zárt rendszer (a Föld) nem teszi ezt lehetővé hosszú távon.

Collision? The Protective Systems of the Natural Bases of Life and the Economy
Synopsis: 

The ultimate goal of sustainable development is sustainability itself: the endless, unbroken survival. In order to reach this goal it is indispensable to protect the environmental pillar, which is the aim of environmental protection, habitat protection, protection of the living world and nature conservation. All these protective systems make an effort – with an aim of saving also the society itself – to protect “the natural bases of life”, which are threatened by the misinterpreted economical interests. Economic growth seems to be a decent goal in itself, of course, in order to supply the constantly growing population of humanity with material goods, so as to guarantee a minimum level of human dignity, however, a closed system (the Earth) cannot allow this in the long run.
